POPULAR FISHING KNOTS

Over the next few months we are going to show you a few knots that you might find useful in this years forthcoming fishing season.

We started our knot series with the PALOMAR KNOT , BIMINI TWIST, UNI KNOT, OFFSHORE SWIVEL KNOT, TRILENE KNOT, BRISTOL KNOT, END LOOP KNOT, BLOOD KNOT, DROPPER LOOP KNOT, ALBRIGHT KNOT, SURGEONS KNOT and the SNELL KNOT.

INTRODUCTION
The PALOMAR KNOT is very easy to tie and very strong, delivering close to 100 percent of the line’s breaking strength. It can be used in a variety of situations, such as when tying on hooks, swivels and lures. It’s also a good knot to use with braided line. Its major drawback is that it requires more line to tie than most other knots, and can therefore reduce the length of a leader (trace).

The BIMINI TWIST is used to create a loop in the end of the fishing line. The doubled line provides insurance against break-offs caused by the line repeatedly passing over the upper rod guides when casting or fighting a fish close to the boat. It also protects against abrasion caused by contact with rocks, weeds, roots, pilings, shells or the fish’s body. The BIMINI Twist is fairly complicated and tricky to tie, but it delivers 100 percent of the line’s breaking strength. The BIMINI TWIST is often used in inshore fishing to create a section of double line that guards against break-offs, yet won’t interfere with casting and will pass easily through the rod guides when fighting a fish in close. The BIMINI loop can be tied directly to the eye of a hook or lure, or connected to a heavier mono or wire “shock leader” via an Albright knot to form a wind-on leader system.

The UNI KNOT is a basic fishing knot which can be varied to meet virtually every knot tying need in either freshwater or saltwater fishing and is used for tying fishing line to terminal tackle.

The ARBOR KNOT is used to connect the main fishing or backing line to your reel.

The BRISTOL KNOT is used to attach main line to a heavy leader. It also useful for joining any loop knot such as a BIMINI TWIST or SPIDER HITCH to your reel line.

The END LOOP KNOT is used anytime your fishing a lure who action is depends on a free swimming movement.

The BLOOD KNOT  is a very effective way of joining two similar sized lines.

The DROPPER LOOP KNOT  is used to attach to create a loop in a leader which sits away from your line to avoid tangles.

The ALBRIGHT KNOT is used to join monofilaments with different diameters. It is commonly used to join the fly line to the fly-reel backing line. It is well suited to slide readily through the guides when a fish pulls enough to reach your backing.

The SURGEONS KNOT can be tied quickly and easily in the end of a line. It is often used to make a loop to loop connection or to create a loop which allows the artificial lure or fly to move naturally.

The SNELL KNOT allows the leader, or trace, to be directly tied to a baited hook.

The RAPALA KNOT is intended to be tied directly to the lure. The Rapala brothers emphasize that if a swivel or leader is essential, choose the lightest tackle possible. This allows the lure to move with a natural motion
