BCC MEMBERS BOAT FESTIVAL 2018

The 56th BRITISH CONGER CLUB MEMBERS CHAMPIONSHIP took place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th June 2018 from the port of Plymouth.  LOADS OF EELS BUT BIG SPECIMENS WERE UNCOOPERATIVE

In contrast to previous years the Competition was fished in perfect weather over the two days and the fleet of five charter boats "TAMESIS"-Roy Strevens, "CRUSADER"-Richard Matthews, "SEA ANGLER II"-Malcolm Jones, "TYPHOON"-Phil Curtis from Looe and "ACES HIGH" - Iain Holman provided quality fishing for 38 of the club's members.

The atmosphere on all of the boats was great with a lot of banter. In the end a total number of captured conger eels was 199, with only 2 being bought to the scales.

The heaviest on Day 1 was an eel of 40 lbs 7 ozs by Paul Maris of Bishop Stortford who fished from Roy Strevens "TAMESIS"

Fish were eager to take baits on Day 2 but only one fish was over minimum size was captured. This was caught by Peter Thatcher of Guildford who was last yearís winner it weighed 53 lbs 4 ozs.

It was only the second time that a back to back Championships had been achieved the former by Maureen Walsh in 2001/2.

Peterís conger was taken late in the day from Ian Holmanís and being still lively was released at the dock and swiftly swam away.

The overall winner of the "HETTY EATHORNE TROPHY"was Peter Thatcher with an eel of 53lb 4oz.  Runner up was Paul Maris with an eel of 40lb 7oz,

Winner of the "REG QUEST MEMORIAL TROPHY" for most eels released was John Locker, who turned in a great performance to catch 16 eels over the two days.

The winning team was the
"Longer, Stronger, Conger" (1520 pts) and runners up were

"Black Rats" (1480 pts).

Top boat went to skipper Iain Holman on "ACES HIGH".

The daily optional pools for "biggest eel on the day" went to
Paul Maris on Day 1 and Peter Thatcher on Day 2.

The trophies were presented by BCC Chairman Paul Sweetman.
